7 days, 7 beings – Ann

MFA Sunday school

Annie Ruth Lynch

Physical traits (height, weight, hair and eye colour, scars, distinguishing characteristics)

Ann is thin and wiry. She works out to maintain her figure. She has hair that comes down to her jaw line in chestnut curls. Her eyes are green and surrounded by long lashes which are meticulously painted with mascara and curled. Her lips are thin and lined from years of smoking and high stress.

Basic familial relationships (are they married, have children, no siblings, two mothers?)

Both her parents are alive but they live far away. She has two sons and a husband. She worships her sons and over mothers them, spoiling them completely. Her husband is rather hen pecked, she definitely wears the trousers at home, as well as being the main bread winner.

Sunday: what did he/she eat for breakfast today?  Is this usual?  Unusual?  And why?

Sunday morning she ate a large bowl of fruit salad with strawberries, pineapple and melon, mixed in with some oatmeal. She eats this every morning, unless she has an early day at work and is too busy then to even eat, which happens a lot.

Monday: what sort of relationship does he/she have with his/her parents?  Are they still alive?  Does he/she see his/her parents?  Why or why not?

She loves her parents dearly but she rarely sees them. They live way up north and she is always too busy with her career or with her boys’ hobbies to make the long drive up there, even though they are very old and her father has Parkinson’s. She even just forgot her mother’s birthday. She always feels bad for a  little bit and promises them and herself that she will make more time to go and see them but she always forgets, or lets her job get in the way.

Tuesday: what is your character wearing at this exact moment?  Are these his/her normal clothes or are they wearing something for a special occasion?

She is at work. She is a high flying financial services director. She wears a slim fitting grey suit dress with black tights and patent kitten heeled shoes with a large silver buckle on the toe. She wears a burnt orange silk pashmina arranged around her arms and shoulders. Her jewellery is bold, large and matches her statement scarf. She always dresses well for work, she dresses to impress, to be taken seriously in the male dominated world in which she works. You can tell Ann looks after herself.

Wednesday: if your character is old enough to vote, how is she/he voting in the next election?  If your character is too young to vote, how closely do they follow political issues?

She votes conservative. She believes in social welfare but she doesn’t want to pay too much for it from her hard earned salary. She also doesn’t want her sons to have to work as hard as she did in life, not that they will have to as they are white middle class men. She has made sure that they really set up in life and that they too will vote for the party which looks after their interests. That is Conservative.

Thursday: where would your character like to go on vacation?  Why?

Ann likes to try new places where she can have a bit of culture and also have some time lying in the sun relaxing, reading. She works terribly hard, all the time and she has to have some down time. She would like to go to the Caribbean this year, perhaps Cuba. She remembers the ’62 missile crisis when she was a girl and has always had a fascination with seeing  how the crazy far left people must really live. She likes to have a small taster of how the other people live, more as a small education to her sons, but she also wants to be pampered, to feel rewarded for her hard work.

Friday: describe where your character lives.

Her and her husband own a dream mansion in Hampshire, south England. They are within an hour of London so her daily commute is reasonable to the City.  The house is large, it’s a 7 bedroom custom built haven. They are in the middle of remodelling. Her husband has taken time off from his public sector job to oversee the project for her. She has just picked out a beautiful Welsh Slate floor for the new kitchen and is choosing what colours she wants to go in the Kitchen, Morning Parlour and their bedroom. The furniture is luxurious and she spends her weekends at the local antique shops, picking out paintings and individual pieces of furniture.

Saturday: does your character like him/herself?  What are their favourite personal traits?  What do they wish they could change about themselves?

Ann loves her life but she often wishes she could switch off better from her work. She had each boy and pretty much handed them over to the nanny within weeks of giving birth. She never took her full maternity and has twinges of regret that she barely saw her boys as babies. She regrets that she can’t seem to commit to seeing her parents enough either. She keeps telling herself she can but then something always comes up. She is aware they won’t be around for much longer but that still fails to motivate her enough to make more effort.
